- Client: Wild Mosaic
Brief: Jon at Wild Mosaic asked us to help him develop his business, increase outreach, and better articulate his mission and messaging to his ideal client: namely, 20s and 30s urbanites who want to do something positive for the environment but don't have the time or money to devote to the cause alongside their busy lives.
Goals: Wild Mosaic is a purpose-led business with an environmental core mission: to rewild parts of the UK.
Our work with Wild Mosaic is a great example of how productive (and how flexible) our coaching engagements can be. Our original intention was to coach its founder, to brainstorm methods for growth and outreach, and how to best connect with its ideal client and thereby maximise its impact. But we ended up exploring everything from product innovations to tone-of-voice. We made use of brand archetypes – speaking about the “caregiver”, the “sage”, and the “outlaw” – to begin constructing the right tone or register for Wild Mosaic to speak in on its internet site, but also in its social media and email marketing. We spent time brainstorming ways to re-package its product, introducing watermark logos and subscription options with video updates for those invested in the company. As Sean (here at Defining Chapter) is a copywriter, we spoke about the possibility of writing some of the content for them/Wild Mosaic. Instead, we coached the founder to write his own content, to use succinct, friendly-but-informative language to inspire engagement from Wild Mosaic’s ideal client. Our coaching with Wild Mosaic has been hugely varied, massively rewarding, and we feel demonstrates the benefits of those additional expertise our coaches have to offer. It is also incredible seeing a business grow like this in real-time, week-by-week, with our coaching there to keep the business and its founder accountable to all the goals we establish together.
- Client: Mike (change management consultant)
Brief: Mike was referred to us by a larger management organisation. His colleagues and he felt he was becoming under productive and wanted to reconnect with the motivation and passion he once had for the role.
Goals: to explore the downturn in motivation and passion with Mike—to restore his passion.
We began our engagement with Mike by taking a life inventory, speaking with him about every aspect of his life (his career, family, relationship, hobbies, beliefs, passions, etc.) to see if we could pin point anything that might be hampering him, or anything that might be missing that might serve as inspiration if it were present. Mike was a high achiever and seemed to be doing well in almost every aspect of his experience. It was only when we began talking about creativity that we realised he had ignored a latent dream he’d always had to write something (a novel, some poetry, some short fiction). We coached Mike on his confidence, his options for networking with other writers, for education. We listened to his ideas, encouraged him and held him accountable. While he was busy writing his first novel, Mike’s colleagues noticed a significant change in him (as did his wife and children, he told us). Not only was he on his way to writing his first book and publishing his first short story, he was also much much happier at work, more productive and (his words again) “more fun to be around”. Coaching with Mike is an excellent example of how business coaching often unearths other things, other latent concerns about elements of our lives that aren’t quite working as we secretly want them to. And it’s in this discovery that energy and inspiration for work, life, and creativity can suddenly manifest.
- Client: NotPla
Brief: NotPla has a 100+ employees and loves to engage them all by asking them to present their successes and brief the wider company at monthly meetings. But when they noticed this wasn’t to everyone’s liking, they asked us to come in and help build public speaking confidence, so that everybody could enjoy the process and the company culture would benefit more broadly.
Goals: to design a workshop that would engage a select group of people from within the organization, to inspire confidence in them, to help them overcome anxiety and learn to love public speaking.
During our time with NotPla we designed numerous exercises to help even the most nervous or hesitant of their employees pitch, present and freely share their ideas. We had them speak to the founding values of the company and how these exist in their various roles. We had them pitch their own ideas, play Question Time and The Lying Game. Over time we taught them to associate sharing and public speaking with authenticity, humour, and a spirit of ease knowing they could make mistakes, how to pause and be comfortable with silences, where to put their hands and fix their eyes, but also how to embrace their own uniqueness and idiosyncrasies until they felt comfortable and happy in their own skin. Our group coaching with NotPla is an excellent example again of the variety of applications to Defining Chapter’s style. As experts in workshop design, we built and tailored our approach to the people in the room for guaranteed progress.
